FBI identifies man found dead in Ka'u

HILO, Hawai'i — The FBI has identified a man found shot to death near the entrance of the Kahuku Ranch portion of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park as Arman Bernard Johnson, 44.

Arman Johnson

Johnson appeared to have been shot once in the upper back or lower neck area, according to an FBI spokeswoman.

Johnson was a longtime Hawai'i resident, but most recently had no fixed address, the FBI said. Johnson was a Kona resident for years and was also a former Seattle resident.

The FBI is the lead agency in the joint investigation with Big Island police and the National Park Service because the body was found on federal property in Ka'u.

Big Island police were called at about 5 p.m. Wednesday by a passer-by who found the body near the 71-mile marker of Mamalahoa Highway, Pamela McCullough, supervisory special agent for the FBI, said.

McCullough said the body was found on an overgrown section of the old highway about 100 yards from the newer main road.

The older road is still used for some local traffic by residents, and McCullough said the body did not appear to have been there long before the passer-by found it and called police.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the FBI at (808) 566-4300, or Big Island police at 935-3311.
