Punahou stays unbeaten, 35-32

With the game on the line, the Punahou School girls basketball team was clutch at the line.

The Buffanblu sank 7 of 10 free throws in the final 5:35 last night to rally past visiting Iolani, 35-32, in a showdown of Interscholastic League of Honolulu unbeatens.

Punahou finished the first round with a 5-0 record; the Raiders fell to 4-1.

Free throws actually played a key role the entire game, as Iolani finished a dreadful 1 for 10, while the Buffanblu sank 9 of 14. The Raiders missed all five their second-half free throws after taking a 19-14 lead into intermission.

"That's the only thing we didn't do well tonight, even though that's the one thing that was totally in our control," Iolani coach Glenn Takara said. "But our girls played hard. Punahou just did what they had to do under pressure."

The Buffanblu had to keep their composure after a frustrating first half in which several layups danced around the rim before falling out. The opposite seemed to be happening on the other end, highlighted by Meilin Akamu's 24-foot bank shot which gave the Raiders a 19-14 lead with 2:39 remaining.

"We were putting up a lot of good shots, but they were not going in," said Punahou senior guard Shanna-Lei Dacanay, who finished with a game-high 11 points. "Things just weren't going our way. But in the second half, we just tried to be more aggressive and more intense."

Iolani pushed the lead to 25-18 on freshman center Jamie Smith's layup with three minutes left in the third period, but Dacanay hit a 3-pointer with 50 seconds remaining and Chelsea Deptula's layup just before the buzzer made it 25-23.

Freshman post Shawna Kuehu then opened the final quarter with a layup to tie the game, and Dacanay followed with a free throw and 3-pointer to put the Buffanblu up, 29-25.

The Raiders first points of the period came on Chanel Hirata's 3-pointer with 1:43 left, making it 29-28. Punahou then followed with four straight free throws from Dacanay and Ciana Aiwohi before Smith's putback cut it to 33-30 with 41 seconds remaining.

Free throws by Christine Takara and Dacanay put the Buffanblu up, 35-30, with 10 seconds left. Hennasea Tokumura then scored on a coast-to-coast layup and was fouled with three ticks left, but Punahou rebounded her intentionally missed free throw and ran out the clock.

"We had the foul count in our favor, and the girls stepped up and shot with confidence," Buffanblu coach Mike Taylor said. "All the little things added up in the end."
