The third round of the 72-hole tournament is today.

Three-time defending Mid-Pacific champ Regan Lee shot a 74 yesterday and was at 150.

WATER POLO

UH stops UC Irvine

Iefke Van Belkum scored three of her four goals in the third quarter to lift fourth-ranked Hawai'i to a 9-6 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo victory over No. 11 UC Irvine yesterday at Irvine, Calif.

The Rainbow Wahine, who have won nine in a row, are 14-6 overall and 9-2 in the MPSF. Irvine is 11-12 and 4-8.

UH and Irvine were tied at 4 after the second quarter before the Rainbow Wahine took control with Van Belkum's three goals.

Monika Kruszona added three goals for the Rainbows, including two in the fourth quarter. UH goalie Meike De Nooy had seven stops.

SOFTBALL

Shutout lifts Hawai'i

Tyleen Tausaga went 4 for 4 with five RBIs, and Melissa Coogan pitched a two-hitter to lead the University of Hawai'i to a 9-0 victory over Texas-El Paso in a Western Athletic Conference softball game at Helen of Troy Field in El Paso.

UH is 24-20 overall, 5-5 in the WAC. UTEP is 17-26 and 3-4.

Ashley Ruff hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to give UH a 6-0 lead. Tausaga's three-run triple in the sixth led to the ending of the game after six innings because of the league's eight-run knockout rule.

Coogan (12-9) struck out five and walked two, allowing just four baserunners.

TRACK AND FIELD

UH wins two events

Two University of Hawai'i athletes won events and a third earned an NCAA regional qualifying mark yesterday at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays in Walnut, Calif.

UH's Novelle Murray won the discus with a throw of 52.20 meters (171 feet, 3 inches). Kelly Young won the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 7.76 seconds.

Hawai'i's Tasha Moore finished second in the long jump with a leap of 5.99 meters (19 feet, 8 inches) and qualified for the NCAA West Regional. Rice's Funmi Jimoh was first with a 6-meter (19-8 1/4 inches) jump.

A few of the UH athletes also participated in the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational at Pomona, Calif. Freshman Meghan Weaver had a personal best 14.66 meters to place fourth in the discus. Weaver already has qualified for the NCAA regionals.
