Kalani forges tie for first in OIA East

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

You've got to wake up pretty early in the morning to beat the Kailua High School baseball team, and Kalani did just that yesterday.

The Falcons rallied past the Surfriders, 8-6, in a rare 10 a.m. game at Kahala Field. Kalani's victory knocked Kailua from the unbeaten ranks and created a tie between the two teams for first place (each is 6-1) in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Eastern Division.

Kailua's junior prom forced yesterday's game to start three hours earlier than usual, meaning both teams took batting practice at 7:30 a.m.

"It can be rough playing a 10 o'clock game, but we've been lifting weights at 6:30 in the morning during the week, and this is the first year the team actually wanted to do that," Falcons coach Shannon Hirai said. "So being here early shouldn't be a problem for us."

Still, it was the Surfriders who got off to the quick start. Kailua scored twice in the top of the second inning after Matthew Kinoshita's single, Michael D'Alessio's walk and Tyler Harrison's double, and could have scored a third run if not for a controversial play.

With two outs and Harrison breaking for home from third, the base umpire called a balk on starting pitcher Shamus Kumashiro, who delivered the pitch anyway. Catcher Preston Pires caught the ball and tagged out Harrison, and the umpires conferenced.

The balk call eventually was overruled and the tag-out stood, ending the rally.

"That was a big play because we had the momentum," said Surfriders coach Corey Ishigo. "It was an obvious balk, and Tyler stopped running because he knew it was a balk. But you cannot leave things up to the umpires in our league, because you never know what they're going to call."

Hirai acknowledged it was a crucial play.

"The umpires said (Kumashiro) never stepped off the rubber, so I said, 'If he never stepped off, then it's a legal pitch all the way,' " Hirai said. "It was a big call, because the run would have scored and the inning would have continued."

Kailua stretched the lead to 4-0 in the next inning after Aaron Kunioka's RBI double and a run-scoring fielder's choice, but Kalani answered with five runs in the bottom half.

After Pires' single brought in the first two runs, the Falcons loaded the bases with two outs. Darren Takemoto then hit a high fly ball to left field that dropped in for a rare three-run single to make it 5-4.

"I thought I popped it up, but when I looked it went over (the left fielder's) head," said Takemoto, who added he stumbled running to first base. "We just wanted whatever we could get in that inning. We needed to get on the scoreboard."

All five runs were unearned, aided by a passed ball and one-out error.

"Any decent team is going to capitalize on mistakes like that," Ishigo said.

Kalani avoided a Surfriders' rally in the fourth when center fielder Trevor Teraoka ran down a 400-foot fly ball hit by Kekoa Su'a with two outs and the bases loaded, and the Falcons added a run in the bottom half to make it 6-4. They went up 8-4 in the fifth after an error and Stuart Mikami's two-out RBI single.

Kailua scored two runs in the seventh after two singles and two outfield throwing errors, but reliever Josh Markwith came in to retire the side and seal the win.

"The ball bounced our way today," Takemoto said. "Every play counts, even the small plays."
