Rainbows sweep UTEP in softball

The University of Hawai'i softball team swept a doubleheader from Texas El-Paso in which neither game went the full seven innings.

Shannon Tabion pitched a four-hitter in a 8-0 six-inning victory. The Rainbow Wahine pounded 12 hits in a 9-1 victory in the five-inning second game at El Paso, Texas.

UH swept the three-game series in which all games were called because of the Western Athletic Conference's eight-run mercy rule.

Hawai'i is 26-20 overall, 7-5 in the WAC. UTEP is 17-28 and 3-6. Fresno State leads the WAC at 5-1.

Denise Dahlberg went 4 for 4, including three RBIs and three runs scored in the first game. Tabion struck out four and walked one.

In the second game, Noelle Izumi went 3 for 3, and Valana Manuma hit a two-run homer.

Hawai'i wins two

Iefke Van Belkum scored two goals in the final 1 minute, 16 seconds, to lift fourth-ranked Hawai'i to a 5-4 victory over No. 12 Michigan on the first day of the Long Beach State Tournament at Long Beach, Calif.

Hawai'i (16-6) also beat No. 17 Cal State Northridge, 9-4, yesterday.

Michigan took a 4-3 lead with a goal in the third quarter. Van Belkum scored with 1:16 to go and the go-ahead goal with 41 second remaining.

In the second game, UH's Beth Novak scored three goals, and goalie Jamie Wendell made 13 saves.

Gauthier shares win

University of Hawai'i's Patricia Gauthier shared top honors with Long Beach State's Jill Reynolds in the pole vault yesterday at the Springco-Long Beach Invitational at Jack Rose Track in Long Beach, Calif.

Gauthier and Reynolds each jumped 3.65 meters (11 feet, 11? inches).



BASEBALL

UH-Hilo takes two

Kyle Neuberger pitched a two-hitter to lead the University of Hawai'i-Hilo to a 5-0 victory over Hawai'i Pacific in the second game and a doubleheader sweep at Aloha Stadium yesterday.

Hilo won the first game, 11-4.

Neuberger struck out seven and walked two.

Trailing 4-2 in the first game, the Vulcans scored nine runs in the top of the sixth.

UH-Hilo is 5-33. HPU 20-18.
