Punahou alum wins first pro golf event

Punahou alum Jim Seki won his first professional tournament, capturing the Canadian Professional Golf Tour's Northern California Classic by two strokes at Stockton, Calif., yesterday.

Seki
Seki shot a 4-under-par 68 to finish at 15-under 273, two shots ahead of Rob Johnson of Terre Haute, Ind., at Brookside Country Club.

Seki picked up $16,000 for the victory.

Johnson led by two strokes entering yesterday's final round.

Seki, who now lives in Palo Alto, Calif., is a former Hawai'i high school champion and the 2002 Pac-10 champion from Stanford. He is in his second season on the Canadian tour.

With his win yesterday, Seki is exempt on the Canadian Tour through 2007.



BASEBALL

HPU, UH-Hilo split

Ikena DuPont pitched a four-hitter to lead Hawai'i Pacific to a 3-0 baseball victory over Hawai'i-Hilo in the first game yesterday of a season-ending doubleheader at Aloha Stadium.

Hawai'i-Hilo won the second game, 7-4.

The Vulcans ended their season 6-34. HPU completed coach Allan Sato's 10th and final season at 21-19. Sato announced his resignation last week.

DuPont struck out seven and walked two in the seven-inning first game. HPU's Alika Kuraoka went 2 for 3, including a triple and an RBI.

In the second game, Sean Tamura went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, and Jimmy Crider and Dayne Ogawa each hit homers for UH-Hilo.



WATER POLO

Rainbows win pair

The No. 4-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team won both matches yesterday on the final day of the Long Beach State Tournament.

In the first game, Hawai'i rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat Cal State Bakersfield (11-20), 11-5.

Anna Sieprath, Beth Novick, and Monika Kruszona scored two goals apiece for Hawai'i, which outscored Bakersfield 5-1 in the fourth period.

Hawai'i beat San Diego State (12-16), 9-3, in the second match.

Hawai'i improved to 18-6 and will conclude its regular season April 24 at home against USC.



TENNIS

Tourney at Kapalua

Tennis players between 35 and 70 years old are invited to compete in singles and doubles matches at the 24th annual Kapalua Junior Vet/Senior Tennis Championships May 6 to 8 at Kapalua Resort on Maui.

Tournament fee is $50 per person. Deadline to enter is May 2.

The tournament is open to the public. For details call the Tennis Garden at (808) 669-5677.



TRACK & FIELD

Young NCAA-bound

The University of Hawai'i's Kelly Young posted an NCAA qualifying time of 59.84 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles yesterday at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays in Walnut, Calif.

She finished second behind Meka Rembert-Thompson (unattached), who won in 59.41.

Young, who has already quaified for the NCAA West Regional in the 800, is the first multi-event qualifier for the Rainbow Wahine.

Four other UH athletes have qualified for the regionals.
