BUSINESS BRIEFS
Avalon Group buys Lahaina retail complex

Advertiser Staff and News Services

A group of investors led by Honolulu-based Avalon Group has bought the roughly 12,000-square-foot Mariner's Alley retail complex in Lahaina, Maui, for $16.4 million.

The purchase included a vacant 9,799-square-foot parking lot at 175 Lahainaluna Road that the new owner is evaluating for redevelopment in the near term.

Mariner's Alley at 844 Front St. houses businesses including a Christian Lassen art gallery and Moose McGillycuddy's, and was bought as a long-term investment by individual investors who pool their capital as a so-called tenants-in-common buyer.

NCL to use Maui produce

Norwegian Cruise Line's U.S. subsidiary has reached agreements to buy pineapple and other produce on Maui for its interisland ship Pride of Aloha.

NCL America estimated that it will purchase about 160,000 pounds of pineapple per year from Maui Pineapple Co. NCL said it also planned to buy sugar from Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar Co.

In addition, NCL said it will purchase broccoli, romaine lettuce, cabbage, squash and green beans from the Maui Farmers Cooperative Exchange.

"We are focused on providing the freshest, highest-quality produce possible," said Robert Kritzman, executive vice president and managing director of NCL's Hawaii operations. "These fine locally grown products will significantly enrich the Hawaii experience for our guests."

Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa praised NCL's support of Maui products, saying it is an example of the company's commitment to quality and to the communities it operates in.

The Pride of Aloha has been sailing Hawaii waters since last July, visiting Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island each week. A second Norwegian Cruise Line ship, the Pride of America, is scheduled to begin intersland service this coming July.
