Even horrible reviews can't derail 'Amityville'

Audiences weren't frightened off by the critical panning of "The Amityville Horror," which debuted in the top spot with $23.3 million, according to estimates by Exhibitor Relations. If estimates hold, "Amityville" will be one of the Top 5 horror film openings since August 2004.

"Fever Pitch" stayed in third place with $8.8 million, leaving "Sin City" to fall 53 percent from second to fourth place with $6.7 million. Overall, the Top 12 films earned $73.9 million.

FINAL WORD

Jessica Alba | "Sin City" star on life in Los Angeles:

"Literally the whole town is a tabloid. At every restaurant, every hotel, everywhere you go, people are looking at the door to see who walked in. It seems like no one is ever satisfied with their jobs or their lives; everyone is always sort of maneuvering for something else, something better. But the weather is beautiful."
