Foodland recycling easier for consumers

Hawai'i's fledgling bottle recycling program got a welcome boost from Foodland Super Market, which became the first major retailer to offer in-store redemption of bottles and cans. It's a smart move that's sure to boost its business and benefit the community.

Foodland will begin next month to host Rolloffs Hawaii's mobile redemption center at three of its stores. Consumers then can simply bring their empties to the store on their next shopping trip.

Indeed, it makes good business sense for Foodland, too. Customers come into the store with a redemption receipt to claim cash or merchandise credit, and many are likely to spend some of that and more at the supermarket.

The added convenience of in-store redemption could also translate into added incentive for consumers to haul in those bottles and cans. And that, of course, means a cleaner environment for all of us, and less dependence on our already overtaxed landfill.

More retail participants are needed, however, for the recycling program to achieve its full potential. Let's hope Foodland's initiative inspires other companies to follow suit.
