Advertiser Staff

The University of Hawai'i women's golf team shot a 330 yesterday and is seventh after the first round of the Western Athletic Conference Championships at Kuna, Idaho.

San Jose State and Tulsa lead the eight-team tournament with 301s at Falcon Crest Golf Course.

Sara Odelius and Xyra Suyetsugu, who shot 81s and are tied for 23rd, were Hawai'i's top golfers.

SOFTBALL

UH's Coogan honored

The University of Hawai'i's Melissa Coogan yesterday was named Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for the fourth time in her career.

Coogan, a senior right-hander from West Hills, Calif., extended her WAC winning streak to six games, including three wins in road sweeps of Tulsa and Texas-El Paso last week. Two of the victories were shutouts.

ACADEMICS

3 from UH honored

Three University of Hawai'i women athletes were selected as Arthur Ashe Jr. 2005 Sports Scholars.

Basketball guard Milia Macfarlane, soccer midfielder Joelle Sugai and softball outfielder Tracie Uchima — all seniors — were named to the first team of their respective sports, honored as undergraduate students of color who have succeeded academically and athletically.

Macfarlane carries a 3.62 cumulative grade point average in elementary education, Sugai earned a 3.78 in business and Uchima a 3.86 in animal science.

Also named as Arthur Ashe Jr. Scholars were Rice senior tennis player Tracie Chong, an Iolani graduate, who was named to the second team, and Washington senior gymnast Tacia LaBatte, a Castle graduate.

Chong earned a 3.43 in psychology, and LaBatte a 3.60 in communications.

To be included, students must have competed in an intercollegiate sport; maintained a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2; and have been active on their campuses or in their communities.
