ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
'Born into Brothels' screens

Advertiser Staff and News Services

"Born Into Brothels," the winner of this year's Academy Award for best documentary, rarely takes the route of easy sentiment.

Rather than simply capturing the daily lives of children of prostitutes in Calcutta's red-light district, co-directors Zana Briski and Ross Kauffmann allowed their subjects to tell their own stories. Given cameras by Briski in a photography class and the simple instruction to "shoot the truth," the children document their home lives in gripping, surprisingly composed photos.

Today at 1 and 7:30 p.m. at the Honolulu Academy of Arts' Doris Duke Theatre. Screenings continue through Saturday. Call 532-8768.

All you need to know about animal ailments

Don't know a femur from a fistula? That bible of first-year vet students, "The Merck Veterinary Manual," edited by Susan E. Aiello (Wiley, $45), belongs on every animal lover's bookshelf. (Caveats: Lots of dense, jargony text, and remember that no amount of researching substitutes for a vet's care.)

The reference guide's ninth edition, marking its 50th anniversary, is now available, and includes up-to-date information on emerging diseases such as West Nile and revised sections on exotics. The 1998 edition is available free online at www.merckvetmanual.com.

FINAL WORD

Ian Somerhalder in an interview with the Los Angeles Times on his "Lost" character, Boone, being killed off.

"I am hoping that I will (return). I am not sure that I am, but again it's that really cheesy cliche-ing — it's 'Lost,' so you truly never know."
