QUICK BITES
Resizing the jar, tweaking the mayo, styling the Pyrex

Advertiser Staff and News Services

• Kraft has repackaged its mayonnaise in a 32-ounce shatterproof plastic container with a wide mouth, making it easier to scoop out the fixin's for mac salad. Both regular and light mayonnaise can be found in the new packaging.

And Best Foods has a new canola oil mayonnaise. Canola oil is low in saturated fat, contains omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids (which help reduce "bad" cholesterol and increase "good" cholesterol) and the product contains no trans fats. Average mayo has about 100 calories per tablespoon, with 11 grams of fat; canola mayo has 90 calories and 10 grams of fat, of which 1 gram is saturated. The taste is comparable to regular Best Foods mayo.

• Pyrex is releasing a new line of contemporary serving pieces that are microwave-, oven- and dishwasher-safe. The two styles of Simple Elegance — "waves" and "dots" — platters and bowls range from about $20 for individual pieces to $50 for sets. Go to Amazon.com.

Nagai signs on at Mr. Ojisan restaurant

Mr. Ojisan, the popular à la carte Japanese restaurant on Kapahulu, has a new executive chef, Kunihiko Nagai.

Before his death two years ago, founder Nobu Kawaharada asked his wife, Keiko, to keep the small, homey restaurant going. Now she's bringing on "Kuni-San," former executive chef/owner of Senba Restaurant on King Street, to add some new life to the menu.

Born and raised in Osaka, Nagai began cooking at age 17, learning both American and Japanese techniques. He moved to the Islands 11 years ago, working at Koto in Waipahu, Chunky's Drive-In and then Senba. New items on the menu: tako sunomono, gobo tempura and grilled musubi. He'll also be doing his trademark hamburger steak as an occasional special.
