Rape suspect charged in not updating address

A 37-year-old Kaimuki man accused of raping an 85-year-old neighbor faces additional charges for allegedly failing to update information about his home address contained in a sex-offender registry maintained by the state attorney general's office.

The three-count indictment alleges David Baldaino provided the necessary information following a 1989 conviction on Kaua'i for third-degree sexual assault, but "intentionally or knowingly" failed to report his change of address following subsequent moves.

Each of the offenses contained in yesterday's new indictment against Baldaino is punishable by up to five years in prison.

An April 5 indictment alleges Baldaino burglarized, kidnapped and raped a Kaimuki woman at her Wai'alae Avenue apartment in the pre-dawn hours of March 12.

According to court documents filed in the case, police believe Baldaino got into the woman's home by reaching through open louvers next to her back door, slitting the screen and reaching in to unlock the door.

Police say DNA samples linked Baldaino to the case.

The attack was followed three days later by the sexual assault of a 72-year-old Kaimuki woman in her apartment, raising concerns among many longtime residents. The 72-year-old woman told police she was victimized by a knife-wielding stranger.

Police have said Baldaino is not a suspect in the second sexual-assault case.
