Advertiser Staff

The Iolani School boys tennis team is a victory away from ending one of Hawai'i's longest sports dynasties today.

Punahou has won 32 Interscholastic League of Honolulu championships in a row, but must defeat the Raiders at 4 p.m. at Kamehameha to extend the streak to 33. The match is a winner-take-all playoff after each team finished the regular season with a 13-1 record.

Iolani won the first-round match, 3-2, with Punahou rebounding to win the second-round meeting, 4-1. Each team won on its home court.

Two years ago, Punahou defeated Iolani, 3-2, in a playoff for the overall league title after the Raiders had snapped the Buffanblu's win streak of 260 consecutive ILH matches earlier in the season.

Pearl City sweeps OIA

Pearl City won the O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys and girls team tennis championships Saturday at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

The Chargers boys defeated Roosevelt, 3-2, and the Pearl City girls beat Mililani, 3-2.

The individual championships are set for April 30 and May 2.

Punahou baseball ranked in USA Today?

Punahou's baseball team is expected to make an appearance in USA Today's first Super 25 rankings of the season this week.

The defending state champion Buffanblu are 24-2-1 overall and

11-1-1 in the ILH this season, with their only losses coming to Saint Louis in the preseason and to Kamehameha, 4-3, on April 8. Punahou tied Iolani, 5-5, in a 10-inning game March 22 that was stopped because of darkness.

The Super 25 is compiled by USA Today reporter Chris Lawlor, who consults with sports officials across the nation.

KUO TO COACH MPI

Mason Kuo has been named boys volleyball coach at Mid-Pacific Institute.

Kuo, who played for the University of Hawai'i from 1995 to 1999, was an assistant last season at McKinley, his alma mater. He is a certified public accountant and is pursuing his master's in business administration.

Kuo replaces Vernon Yoshida, who will be Kuo's assistant after serving four years as head coach.

CORRECTION

Kamehameha senior Mari Chun's scoring average in ILH girls golf is 70.8. Another average was mentioned in yesterday's story.
