UH gets 6-10 hoop transfer

Stephen Verwers, a 6-foot-10 forward at Colorado State, said today he will transfer to play for the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team.

"I liked everything about Hawai'i," said Verwers, who visited the UH campus last week. "I think I'll fit in a little better there."

Verwers averaged 1.9 points and 2.0 rebounds in limited playing time as a sophomore with the Rams last season. He said the lack of playing time was one of the main reasons for his transfer.

"I really loved the school and the players there," he said. "But I thought I would get more playing time. There was a disagreement with the coaches."

Verwers was considered one of the top players in Weatherford, Texas, as a high school senior. He said he was recruited by Kansas, Oklahoma State and Texas.

Verwers said he will send his national letter of intent to the Hawai'i coaches today.

His signing would complete the recruiting season for the Rainbow Warriors.

The other new recruits are 6-8 forward Ahmet Tidiane Gueye, 6-6 shooting guard Matt Lojeski, 6-4 point guard Hiram Thompson, 6-1 point guard Dominic Waters and 6-1 point guard John Wilder.
