Glamour goes for drama on stage

Fashion shows in Paris, New York and London are renowned for pushing the envelope and becoming performance art in themselves, providing drama and spectacle in unexpected venues such as train stations and meat packing plants. During the years when Honolulu enjoyed the French Festival, we experienced some of that far-out glamour and drama. Local fashion shows have been more staid in recent years.
Velocity Circus is an arts and entertainment company that performs high-impact spectacles with acrobatics, music and dance, along the lines of a Cirque du Soleil performance.
The group's show has been adapted for Ala Moana's Centerstage by Tim Bostock Productions, which worked with the vertical space so viewers on all three levels of the mall will be able to enjoy the free show.
"One of the great aspects of the Velocity Circus is that they can adapt to any theme or venue," Bostock said. "The company has the ability to fuse together elements from ancient, contemporary and futuristic world cultures, dance, circus arts, visual arts, science, astronomy and more. They were the ideal choice to perform in such an innovative fashion show."
The hour-long show will feature the designs of selected retailers from throughout the mall.
Musicians and dancers will be the models; that's an unusual approach and one which will showcase how the fashions move on the body.
The artistic interpretation of the latest spring fashions is a signature event of the Hawai'i Arts Season, which was introduced last year.
