Baluan wins for duck design

Farrington High School senior Mario Baluan won the best-in-show prize in the 2005 Junior Duck Stamp Design Contest and will represent the state in the national competition in Washington, D.C.

Julia Cost, of Seabury Hall on Maui, was first runner-up, followed by Matsumi Kanzawa, of Waiakea High School in Hilo.

As part of his prize in the state contest, Baluan will receive art supplies and a 70th anniversary Federal Duck Stamp Collection print donated by Ducks Unlimited. National winners will receive a $5,000 cash award and a free trip to Washington. The second-place winner receives a $3,000 cash award; the third-place winner wins $2,000.

The contest is modeled after the Federal Duck Stamp Contest, which is used to design the annual migratory bird hunting stamp. Proceeds from the Junior Duck Stamp support conservation education in the United States.

Artwork sought for phone book

Students can design art for the next O'ahu phone book as part of Hawaiian Telcom's O'ahu Keiki Art Contest.

Entries must be postmarked by April 30.

Students can create artwork with color pens, pencils or crayons, as long as they are dark enough to be easily scanned.

More than 50 entries will be featured in the directory. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: kindergarten to fourth grade, fifth to eighth grade, and ninth to 12th grade.

First-place winners will receive $150; second place, $100; and third place, $50. Each school with a first-place winner will receive $500.

Hawaiian Telcom will succeed Verizon Hawaii as the main local telephone service provider next month.

To receive an entry form and templates, call contest coordinator Trudy Wong-You at 543-3519.

Childcare work honored May 8

PATCH, a statewide childcare resource and referral agency, will honor Hawai'i's childcare professionals on May 6, National Provider Appreciation Day.

Among those honored will be family childcare providers, parent participation program staff, preschool staff, family members, friends and neighbors who routinely provide care for as many as 76,500 Hawai'i youngsters.

PATCH recommends showing gratitude for your childcare provider on May 6 by sharing a few special thoughts in a card, coordinating efforts of a group of parents to surprise your provider with a gift, or volunteering your help for a day at your child's program.
