Abubo, Ballard tie for third

Hawai'i surfers Megan Abubo and Rochelle Ballard tied for third place in the Roxy Pro Fiji yesterday.

The final day of the elite competition was completed in 6-foot waves at Cloudbreak, Fiji.

Defending world champion Sofia Mulanovich of Peru defeated Australia's Layne Beachley in the one-on-one final.

With the victory, Mulanovich moved into the No. 1 position on the 2005 World Championship Tour ratings.

Abubo, who was No. 1 entering the contest, dropped to No. 2.

Abubo and Ballard were both eliminated in the semifinals, and they each received $4,000.

Keala Kennelly of Kaua'i was eliminated in the quarterfinals and received $3,000.

Kamana'o to train with U.S. national squad

University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball player Kanoe Kamana'o will be among 33 athletes that will train with the 2005 USA Women's National Team in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Former UH players Melissa Villaroman and Robyn Ah Mow-Santos, a member of the U.S. National Team that played in the Athens Olympics, were also selected to train with the team.

The top performers will compete in the USA Open Volleyball Championships in Denver, from May 28 to June 4, and three other events.
