Bill Bogert, The Honolulu Advertiser's vice president of production, was named Production Executive of the Year by Gannett Co. Inc. for his leadership in completing the newspaper's $82 million state-of-the art printing facility in Kapolei on schedule.

The award also recognized Bogert's work in making the successful transition to an offset press from a letter press, and the rapid conversion of the printing of USA Today, Gannett's flagship publication.

"I am thrilled and honored, and have to attribute it to good hiring practices," Bogert said. " I have a great team that did all the hard work and made me look good."

Before joining The Honolulu Advertiser in 1996, Bogert oversaw a range of projects at Gannett, including newspaper plant renovations, equipment installations and USA Today print-site launches.

In 1993, he supervised the construction of Gannett's $53 million newspaper facility in San Bernardino, Calif. In the late 1980s, Bogert served as vice president of operations at USA Today in Roslyn, Va.

Bogert, 65, began his career in 1958 when he joined the production team at the Poughkeepsie (N.Y.) Journal. He also has worked at newspapers in South Dakota, Pennsylvania, Florida and Southern California.
