What mother or tutu can resist the primal urge to blandish photos of her keiki or mo'opuna (grandchild)?

She doesn't even have to fish for the wallet in her handbag: With an M.P. bag (that stands for My Photos) by Two Bag Ladies, a small Honolulu hand bag firm, those photos can embellish her bag for all to see.

Designers Jeri Lynch and Fay Scherr take 10 to 20 favorite photos, scan them, crop them and collage them onto a wood bag to create a veritable scrapbook that can be carried with a woman wherever she goes. There are seven bag styles from which to choose.

Two Bag Ladies have done M.P. bags as a wedding gift with photos of the bride and groom, birthday gifts for best friends and a bag celebrating Hanahau'oli School's 85th anniversary that featured archival photos of the school. With an eye to the art of the bag, they like to "take some liberty in our cropping to get the most interesting bag," Lynch said. One example was when they gave a vertical stretch treatment to a photo of a little boy with a giraffe at the zoo.

The bags generally come with a fabric flap embellished with beads. The fabric used on a wedding bag was a swatch from the bridesmaid's dresses. It could also be a piece from an antique kimono, a Chinese silk embroidery, a vintage Hawaiian print — or any other fabric that has special meaning to the woman who will be carrying the bag.

M.P. bags can be ordered exclusively through Riches Kahala. They cost $180, with the flap, beads and decorative hardware included. View the style choices at www.2bagshonolulu.com.
