Military personnel with Hawai'i connections who are killed in Iraq or Afghanistan will receive a new Hawai'i Medal of Honor under a bill signed by Gov. Linda Lingle.

Eligible for the award would be active duty, national guard and reservists who were legal residents or stationed in Hawai'i at the time they were killed. Also eligible are those who attended school in the Islands at some period in their life.

"We want to make it clear that the Legislature and the state support our friends and families in the military and make it extremely clear that we owe a debt of gratitude to the families of servicemen killed in action," said Rep. K. Mark Takai, D-Newtown-Pearl City, a Hawai'i Army National Guard officer who introduced the bill.

The medal would be awarded through a concurrent resolution approved by both houses of the Legislature.

Web site set up for missing man

The sister of a man who went missing last October has set up a Web site in the hope that it will help police generate leads in the case.

The Web site, www.findgilbert.com, was set up by Janey Caravallo, sister of the missing man, Gilbert Caravallo. The site features a photo of Gilbert, along with notes about the last time his family saw him, and contact information for the Honolulu police detectives who are looking into his disappearance.

Police continue to look for anyone who had contact with Caravallo after 3 p.m. on Oct. 6, 2004, in Pearl City. Caravallo lived in Pearl City with his mother.

Caravallo, 36, is 6 feet 1, 225 pounds and has black hair, brown eyes, a mustache and a goatee. The word "Gilbert" is tattooed on his back, and a tattoo on his upper right arm carries the word "Wizard."
