Punahou rallies by Maryknoll, 56-49

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

The Punahou School girls basketball team spoiled Maryknoll's homecoming last night, rallying past the Spartans, 56-49, in a key Interscholastic League of Honolulu showdown at McCabe Gym.

The Buffanblu improved to 7-0 in the ILH, while the Spartans fell to 4-3 with three games remaining in the regular season. The regular-season champion will earn the league's automatic state tournament berth. A postseason tournament involving the other five teams will determine the ILH's other berth.

"Don't count us out yet," Maryknoll coach Bob Samson said.

Last night's game had a championship atmosphere, with several hundred maroon-clad Spartans supporters providing rock concert-type noise throughout. Maryknoll used the energy to build a 23-9 lead early in the second period before Punahou closed to 28-23 at the half.

The Spartans built the lead back up to 45-33 late in the third quarter. Punahou cut the lead to 45-38 on Stacy Brossy's 3-pointer with seven seconds left in the period.

Freshman post Shawna Kuehu then opened the final period with seven straight points to tie it at 45-45, and after Maryknoll took one last lead at 48-45, the Buffanblu finished the game with an 11-1 run.

"No matter how far behind we got, we knew we could still come back," said Kuehu, who finished with a game-high 22 points — including 11 in the fourth quarter — and 11 rebounds. "(The Spartans) have a lot of pride and a lot of energy and they play the game hard. I think the cheering gave them energy, too. But at halftime we talked about the pride of Punahou, and we said we really want it."

Samson said the Buffanblu eventually wore his team down.

"When you're tired, that's what happens," Samson said of the Spartans' late struggles. "But give Punahou credit. They really come at you."

Shanna-Lei Dacanay added 16 points for the Buffanblu. Jessica Akamine led Maryknoll with 15 points.
