AROUND TOWN
Grandpa to share ride with grandson

Tony Boneza, who has done every Metric Century bike ride since the first one in 1992, plans to introduce a new generation to his passion Sunday.
David Cheever photo Boneza said he and Dillon have been training together for several months.
"He's getting good," Boneza said. "A couple of times when we went out, he got a little tired, but he's pretty strong and so I know he'll be able to handle it."
The Metric Century offers three distances: 25, 50 and 100 kilometers. Boneza and Dillon will do the 25, which leaves from Hale'iwa and goes along the North Shore to a turnaround at Sunset Beach Elementary School.
Boneza points out that you usually ride into the wind going to Sunset.
"That's OK because you're fresher going out," he said. "Coming back the breeze is at your back and it's lots of fun that way."
And you can't beat the view.
"I do (the ride) because it's so scenic, so beautiful." Boneza said.
Boneza said he has been a bike rider for about 15 years. Before that, he was a runner and did two marathons.
"I was never fast, but I always finished," he said.
After his right knee gave out around 1990, he had surgery, and turned to biking.
Boneza's training for the Metric Century is straight forward. He rides two days during the week and one day on weekends. Each of his three weekly rides is about 20 miles, although now and then he stretches one of his rides to 30 miles. Each of his training rides is on the Windward Coast going either direction from his Kailua home.
Boneza said his grandson goes mountain bike riding with some of his buddies, but he advises him that road riding is different.
When he trains with his grandson on the road, Boneza provides this advice: "Keep a steady pace. In road bike riding it's all about how you pace yourself. Keep it steady, except when road conditions require slowing down. I keep it at about 12 miles per hour. That way you can go long distances. Bursts of speed just tire you out."
Very important, Boneza said, are bike pants with padding in the seat. He also wears a very colorful bike jersey so he's visible at all times. And he emphatically says a helmet is not an option.
Boneza, 75, proudly said he has talked his 13-year-old grandson, Dillon Cadina, into doing the ride with him.
Tony Boneza, right, who has ridden in every Metric Century bike ride, will ride Sunday with grandson Dillon Cadina.
