Unemployment lowest in nation

Hawai'i's 2.8 percent unemployment rate for March ranked it best in the country, according to federal data released yesterday.

The Islands have had the lowest unemployment rate in the nation for eight of the last 15 months. The federal rankings can be found at www.bls.gov/news.release/laus.nr0.htm.



Firm to join wireless market

Hawaiian Telcom last week filed a certificate of registration with the Public Utilities Commission notifying the state of plans to begin offering wireless phone service on or about May 1.

Hawaiian Telcom will be the new name for Verizon Hawaii following a sale to The Carlyle Group, which is scheduled for May 2. Hawaiian Telcom will resell services provide by an existing wireless company such as Sprint PCS under the Hawaiian Telcom name.



Blue Hawaii opens new store

Blue Hawaii Surf is scheduled to open its latest store today at Ala Moana Center.

The locally-owned store will carry surf and skate wear, along with accessories from major brands and its own Blue Hawaii label.

The store's design reflects an urban skating theme, with a skating ramp in the front window.

The 2,150-square-foot store is on the mall's third level next to Shirokiya.
