Rainbow Wahine down Louisiana Tech in WAC softball, 7-1

Melissa Coogan pitched a six-hitter as the University of Hawai'i beat Louisiana Tech, 7-1, in a Western Athletic Conference softball game last night at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Coogan, who improved to 14-9, walked one and struck out six.

Hawai'i's Denise Dahlberg batted 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBIs, and Tyleen Tausaga went 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Kaulana Gould and Kristi Yoshizawa also had two hits for the Rainbow Wahine.

The Rainbow Wahine improved to 27-20 and 8-5; Louisiana Tech dropped to 18-36 and 2-5.

The teams will play a doubleheader today starting at 2 p.m.



GOLF

UH-Hilo men in lead

The University of Hawai'i-Hilo men's golf team shot an 8-under-par 276 yesterday and will take a 22-stroke lead into the final round of the Pacific West Conference Championship.

The Vulcans have a two-round total of 553 at Hilo Municipal Golf Course.

Montana State-Billings is second at 575 and Western New Mexico third at 578. Local schools Hawai'i Pacific (598), Brigham Young-Hawai'i (620) and Chaminade (779) round out the tournament.

Hilo's Nick Mason shot a 6-under 65 yesterday and leads the tournament with a 135. Teammate Garrett Okamura is second, two strokes back.

Western New Mexico leads the women's tournament with a 625. Hilo (652) is second, followed by Billings (690), BYU-Hawai'i (816), Chaminade (933) and HPU (1,049).

The final round will start today 7 a.m.



TENNIS

UH men eliminated

The University of Hawai'i men were eliminated by SMU, 4-2, yesterday at the Western Athletic Conference Championship at the UH tennis complex.

Hawai'i's Dalibor Ptak and Bryon Weinberg won their singles matches in straight set.

SMU will play Rice in today's semifinals, and Boise State will face Tulsa.

In the women's tournament, Rice will play Fresno State in today's final.



Hilo, BYUH in finals

The Brigham Young-Hawai'i and Hawai'i-Hilo men's and women's tennis teams will play for the Pacific West Conference Championship today at BYUH courts in La'ie.

The BYUH men beat Hawai'i Pacific, 5-1, yesterday, while the Vulcans beat Montana State-Billings, 6-0.

The BYUH women beat Billings, 9-0, and Hilo beat HPU, 5-1.

The men's and women's finals will start at 9 a.m.



TRACK & FIELD

UH woman qualifies

University of Hawai'i athlete Novelle Murray had an NCAA-qualifying hammer throw of 182 feet, 9 inches yesterday at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, Calif.

Murray's throw broke her own school record of 177-4.

The junior is the second UH athlete to meet multiple qualifying standards for the NCAAs. She earlier qualified in the discus.

Kelly Young qualified for the 400- and 800-meter runs.
