UPW reaches tentative contract agreement

The United Public Workers union has reached a tentative contract agreement with the state, Gov. Linda Lingle announced today.Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. If ratified by the union's members this week, the two-year contract would run from July 1 through June 30, 2007.
The contract would cover custodians, sanitation workers, prison guards, public hospital workers, food service workers and other state and county government employees. About 9,000 workers are covered by the contract.
A ratification vote will be held Thursday.
Members of the Hawai'i State Teachers Association will also take a ratification vote Thursday on a tentative contract agreement. Terms were not disclosed. The deal was reached Saturday.
