'Aiea spoils Mililani's perfect season, 6-5

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

'AIEA — The last unbeaten O'ahu Interscholastic Association baseball team fell yesterday, but remained in first place anyway.

'Aiea held off Mililani, 6-5, when C.J. Tausaga scored on Derek Grace's single to left field with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning at 'Aiea Recreation Center field. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for Na Ali'i (6-3) and dropped the Trojans (8-1) from the ranks of the unbeaten, but not from first place in the OIA's Western Division as Leilehua (7-2) pulled a 3-1 win over Wai'anae (7-2).

'Aiea led 5-1 until the top of the seventh inning, when Mililani rallied for four runs. Na Ali'i loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Trojans reliever Kelsey Nakata escaped the jam with a forceout at home and a strikeout.

"Today we just wanted to get a win, because we were on a losing streak," Grace said. "We've played close ball games, but we always ended up losing."

That finally changed yesterday in the eighth inning, after Tausaga hit a one-out single to left and advanced to second base on a walk to Marc Alejo. After a strikeout, Tausaga broke for third as Grace lined a 1-2 breaking ball into left field, allowing Tausaga to score standing up.

"I didn't know he ran," 'Aiea coach Ryan Kato said. "When (Grace) hit the ball, I turned to wave C.J. home and he was right there — he almost ran into me. But it's OK. He has the green light."

Tausaga said "it felt right" to take off on the pitch.

"I had a couple good jumps on the pitches before, and the pitcher went with a high leg kick," Tausaga said. "Plus Derek had two strikes on him, so I figured if he struck out it wouldn't matter ... I might as well run."

The play was the last in a game filled with dramatic momentum swings. After Mililani took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Na Ali'i answered with Kurt Nishi's bases-loaded double and Alejo's run-scoring groundout to make it 3-1 in the second.

Alejo had another RBI groundout in the fourth and Lance Powell followed with a run-scoring single to make it 5-1.

That's how it stood until the seventh, when the Trojans led off with a hit batter and walk. After a strikeout, Jordan Apduhan hit a run-scoring single and Justin Sagami followed with an RBI ground-rule double, after his sharp grounder took a big hop over the left fielder's head and rolled all the way under the fence.

Dustin Antolin then hit a sacrifice fly to score Apduhan, and Tony Aquino followed with an RBI single to left to tie the score at 5-5. Reliever Shane Koga finally got out of the inning with a fly to center.

"I'm proud of the way our guys came back," Mililani coach Dean Sato said. "That's the sign of a good team."
