UH-Hilo softball team captures PacWest title

The University of Hawai'i-Hilo softball team swept a doubleheader from Hawai'i Pacific yesterday to win the Pacific West Conference and earn its first postseason berth since 1992.

UH-Hilo (31-9 overall, 16-4 in the PacWest) won 8-0 and 11-10 in 11 innings at Hilo. The Vulcans clinched a berth in the six-team regionals next month. HPU is 21-21 and 12-6.

Leo Sing Chow pitched a three-hit shutout, striking out out four, in the first game, which was called after five innings because of the conference's eight-run rule. Sing Chow also went 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

In the second game, Natalie Fuijmoto singled to drive in Sing Chow with the winning run in the bottom of the 11th.

Lisa Jackson led the Vulcans going 3 for 5 with three RBIs.



MORE SOFTBALL

UH defeats LaTech

Ashley Ruff went 3 for 3 to lead Hawai'i past Louisiana Tech, 6-3, in the second game of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

UH won the first game, 9-1, scoring four runs to end it in the sixth inning because of the WAC's eight-run rule.

In the first game, Denise Dahlberg went 3 for 3 and scored two runs for UH.

Hawai'i is 29-20 overall and 10-5 in the WAC. Louisiana Tech is 18-38 and 2-7.



TENNIS

BYUH sweeps PacWest

Brigham Young-Hawai'i's men and women defeated Hawai'i-Hilo to sweep the Pacific West Conference Tournament tennis titles yesterday at La'ie.

The BYUH women got wins from Jing Jing Liu, Adrienn Hegedus, Tetyana Bula, Gurianna Korinihona and Crystal Schwenke to beat Hilo, 5-0. The Seasiders have won 126 consecutive dual matches and are 25-0 this season.

BYUH got wins from Leon So'onalole, Jakub Huza and Jeffery Rice and two doubles victories in a 5-1 win over UH-Hilo's men. BYUH is 22-5.

BYUH's teams will play in the NCAA Division II West Regional, May 6 and 7, at a site to be determined.



GOLF

Mason, UH-Hilo win

Nick Mason shot a final round 3-under-par 68 yesterday for medalist honors to lead the University of Hawai'i-Hilo to the Pacific West Conference men's golf championship yesterday at Hilo Municipal Golf Course.

Mason finished at 10-under 203 to beat teammate Garrett Okamura by three strokes.

The Vulcans shot a 282 yesterday for a 835. Montana State Billings was second at 865, followed by Western New Mexico (866), Hawai'i Pacific (886), Brigham Young-Hawai'i (943) and Chaminade (1,144).

Katharine Dorris shot a 78 for a 227 to win medalist honors and lift Western New Mexico to the women's title.

Four strokes behind Dorris were UHH's Kiilani Matsuyoshi and Halley Montalban.

Western New Mexico shot a 320 for a 945. UHH was second (980), followed by MSU-Billings (1,039), BYU-Hawaii (1,231), Chaminade (1,410) and HPU (1,562).

UH-Hilo will play in the NCAA Northwest/West Super Regional at Dakota Dunes, S.D., May 2 to 4.

Warriors finish sixth

The University of Hawai'i men's golf team finished sixth out of 20 teams at the PING Golf Cougar Classic at Riverside Golf Course in Provo, Utah, yesterday.

Fresno State won the tournament after a 277 for a 820 total. BYU was second at 828. UH finished with a 283—853.

Fresno State's Mark Modglin shot a 72—202 for a one-stroke victory over teammate Ryan Carter (67).

UH junior Jarett Hamamoto finished tied for 12th at 209 after a 2-under 70 yesterday. UH's Cody Wolfenbarger shot a 70 and finished tied for 17th at 211.

The WAC Championship is May 2 to 4 at Choudrant, La.
