Stryker brigade gets court go-ahead

Three Native Hawaiian and environmental groups have lost their federal court challenge to the Army's ongoing efforts to establish a fast-strike Stryker Brigade unit in Hawai'i.

Chief U. S. District Judge David Ezra today threw out their lawsuit, ruling that the groups raised their objections too late. But even if they protested early enough, the Army properly notified the public and adequately studied the impact of the project, the judge ruled.

The $1.5 billion project calls for the transformation of the Army's 2nd Brigade of the 25th Infantry Division into a Stryker unit.

"The Army is pleased with Judge Ezra's ruling and appreciates the court's thoughtful consideration of this very important matter," the 25th Infantry Division said.

William Aila Jr., 47, spokesman for Na 'Imi Pono, one of the three groups, said he was disappointed, but the decision was not unexpected in view of Ezra's ruling last year refusing to halt the project while the suit was pending.
