County orders five hybrid cars

Kaua'i County has ordered five hybrid cars built by Toyota to replace old passenger vehicles being retired from the county fleet.

"We ordered five Toyota Priuses and are expecting the shipment in a few months," said Jason Alfiler, who runs the county's automobile repair shop. Alfiler has experience with alternative vehicles, having been a driver with the Kaua'i Community College solar electric car entry in the 1993 Sunrayce.

The Prius uses both a gasoline engine and electric motors to power a standard passenger-sized car that can get 50 miles to the gallon.
