USC ends UH's 14-game win streak in water polo

Second-ranked Southern California scored three goals in the fourth quarter to defeat No. 4 Hawai'i, 9-7, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo match yesterday, ending the Rainbow Wahine's 14-game winning streak.

A crowd of 450 watched the MPSF regular-season finale at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

USC improved to 21-3 overall and 11-1 in the MPSF. Hawai'i is 18-7 and 9-3. UH, seeded fourth, plays 14th-seed Pacific in the opening round of the conference tournament on Wednesday at Berkeley, Calif.

Erika Figge scored two goals and Lauren Wenger added another to give USC a 9-6 lead in the fourth quarter. UH's Iefke Van Belkum scored with 1 minute, 15 seconds to go to close to 9-7.

Beth Novick led UH with three goals.

UH goalie Meike De Nooy had six stops and two steals.

Brittany Hayes scored three goals to lead USC.



TENNIS

Boise State captures WAC men's title

Punahou alum Ikaika Jobe and doubles partner Matias Silva of Boise State defeated Rice's Tony Haerle and Filip Zivojinovic to help the Broncos win their second Western Athletic Conference men's tennis title, 4-3, yesterday at the University of Hawai'i Tennis Complex.

Jobe lost his No. 4 singles match to Zivojinovic, 6-4, 7-5, but combined with Silva to win, 8-5.

Luke Shields, Thomas Schoeck and Eric Roberson won singles matches for BSU.

Rice's Robert Searle was named WAC Player of the Year, Shields was Freshman of the Year and Boise State's Greg Patton was Coach of the Year.

Fresno State won the WAC women's title on Saturday.



TRACK AND FIELD

Murray sets Hawai'i record in discus

University of Hawai'i junior Novelle Murray set a school record in the discus with a throw of 177 feet, 11 inches, at the Triton Invitational at La Jolla, Calif., on Saturday.

Murray, who has qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the discus and hammer throw, beat Joan Gago's UH record, set in 1983, by more than six feet.

Murray is the two-time defending WAC champion in the discus, and has the best throw among conference athletes this season.
