Wai'anae's Okada atop OIA golf leaderboard

Wai'anae's Alvin Okada shot an opening-round 6-under-par 66 yesterday to take a seven-stroke lead at the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Golf Championship at Makaha Resort Golf Club.
Pearl City's Mike Sato is second.
In the girls division, Leilehua's Brittany Choy shot a 72 and leads Jackie Hilea of Moanalua by eight strokes.
The Pearl City boys team shot a 304 and leads second-place Castle by four strokes.
In the girls division, Roosevelt shot a 249 and leads second-place 'Aiea by 12 strokes.
The final round is Monday at the Turtle Bay Resort's Fazio Course.
Gould receives honor
University of Hawai'i left fielder Kaulana Gould was named Western Athletic Conference softball player of the week for her performance in a three-game sweep of Louisiana Tech last week.
Gould, a freshman from 'Ewa Beach, batted 7 for 10 with five RBIs against the Lady Techsters.
In WAC games, she leads the team with a .455 batting average, a .510 on-base percentage and a .614 slugging percentage.
UH player All-WAC
University of Hawai'i senior Lauren Fitzgerald was named to the All-Western Athletic Conference women's tennis first team.
The Santa Maria, Calif., native led the team with a career-best 20 singles victories and was ranked as high as
No. 75 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
UH's Murray honored
University of Hawai'i junior Novelle Murray was named the Western Athletic Conference athlete of the week after her performance at the Triton Invitational.
The Surrey, British Columbia, native broke a school record with a discus throw of 177 feet, 11 inches Saturday at La Jolla, Calif.
On Friday, Murray broke a school record with a hammer throw of 182-9.
UH-Hilo honors trio
Nick Mason, Osadonor "Skip" Esene and Leo Sing Chow were selected the 2004-05 University of Hawai'i at Hilo Athletes of the Year at the Vulcan Hall of Fame/All-Sports Banquet yesterday at the UHH Campus Center.
Mason, a senior All-America golfer, won the 55th Annual Southern California Intercollegiate and the Pacific West Conference championships.
Esene, a senior all-region performer, was named PacWest Player of the Year and selected to the NCAA Division II West Region Team.
Sing Chow, a sophomore pitcher/designated player, was a key player in the softball team winning its first PacWest title.
Perkins triumphs
Hawai'i's Bonga Perkins won the Suzuki Pro longboard surfing contest in Denmark, Australia, on Sunday.
Perkins defeated three Australian surfers in the final, which was completed in 2- to 4-foot waves.
Hawai'i's Kekoa Uemura won the noserider division for completing the longest noserides.
