NEW YORK Pepsi Bottling Group Inc., the world's No. 2 soft-drink distributor, said the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found that the company violated the Clean Water Act at four bottling plants, including one in Hawai'i.The company received notice of the violations "as a result of certain events related to waste water discharge and storm water run-off," according to a filing today with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The company wasn't more specific.
Fines may be sought in connection with one or more of the violations, the filing said. The fines and any costs to repair damages will not be material to the company's finances, Pepsi Bottling said.
The Hawai'i plant is located in 'Aiea. The other three plants are in California.
The EPA last month said 'Aiea plant did not have the necessary permit to discharge storm water that flows into Halawa Stream and then into Pearl Harbor's East Loch.
The EPA also said the 'Aiea plant sent acidic industrial effluent to the sewer system in violation of the "low pH" requirement under the agency's general pretreatment regulations.
