ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Tonight's 'Lost' touted as new
Advertiser Staff and News Services
After another couple of weeks of viewer-angering reruns, the good folks at ABC are touting tonight's episode of "Lost" as a new one. Truth is, it is and it isn't.
With only four new episodes of the series left (including a two-hour season finale on May 25), the network gives us "Lost: The Journey" at 7 p.m. tonight. The one-hour episode recaps important series touchstones. ABC's "Lost" Web site touts more than a simple flashback episode, promising "a provocative new journey through the lives of some of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 and a closer look at the island they're stranded on." We'll see.
Throughout, McCloud makes use of quotes from a panel of women surfers. The book covers everything from surf science and where to select gear to wave etiquette and traveling with your board.
"For the regular people who don't listen to hip-hop and pick up a newspaper and read 'rap wars' and think that us rappers are animals, they have to understand that we in the hip-hop community really understand that this is entertainment."
Surfing handbook detailed, practical
Young women are taking up surfing in ever-increasing numbers, so Andrea McCloud's new "The Girl's Guide to Surfing" (Chronicle, paper, $12.95) should find an audience. McCloud, a San Diego-area surfer, wrote the book while she was on a long surf safari in Central and South America. It's detailed, clearly written, practical and answers pretty much any question a beginner male or female is likely to have. Illustrations in a retro comic-book-meets-manga style by artist Symbolon give the book a light-hearted feel, but also convey the necessary information.
