A fisherman who drowned in waters off Portlock Monday was identified yesterday as Owen Fujihara of Kailua.
Fujihara, 45, was fishing with a female friend near the China Wall surfing spot when the woman went in for a swim. The woman got into trouble and was struggling to get back to shore.
Police said Fujihara went into the water to help her and was swept out by a large wave. The woman made it back to the rocky shore; Fujihara did not.
Fujihara's body was recovered by surfers and he was taken to Straub Clinic and Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy determined that Fujihara died of asphyxiation due to drowning, the city medical examiner said yesterday.

Police went to the home of the registered owner of the suspect car and arrested a 22-year-old man, who was identified by the man who filed the complaint.
