University of Hawai'i sailor Jennifer Warnock and former Warrior football player Chad Owens yesterday were named the 2005 Jack Bonham Award winners for outstanding performances in athletics and academics.
The announcement was made at the Scholar-Athlete Breakfast in the Stan Sheriff Center.
Warnock is a five-time All-American for the nationally ranked Rainbow Wahine sailing team. As a freshman, she was a member of the 2001 women's national championship team. Last year, she helped UH's coed team win the 2004 coed dinghy national championship.
She has a 3.1 grade-point average in elementary education.
Owens, an All-America receiver/returner, was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the sixth round of the past weekend's National Football League draft.
He is the school's career leader in all-purpose yards (5,461), receptions (239) and punt return yards (1,014).
"I'm proud of the award, but I didn't expect to win it," said Owens, who earned a bachelor's degree in December. He had a 2.93 GPA.
"I take things seriously, and I took school seriously," he said. "I'm not just an athlete. I want to strive to do well in other things."
The award is named after the late UH assistant athletic director who was killed in a plane crash in 1974.
