Kapolei topples Radford in OIA West, 37-33

By Brandon Masuoka
Advertiser Staff Writer

Sparked by a tough defense and a hot-shooting guard, the Kapolei girls basketball team spoiled Radford's perfect season, 37-33, last night in a marquee matchup of O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division teams at Kapolei.

Radford's Sonya Legaspi grabs a rebound between Kapolei's Jasmine Gipson, front left, and Elizabeth Simanu.

Kayla Kam scored seven of her team-high 11 points in the first quarter and the Hurricanes (10-1) fended off a fourth-quarter rally by the Rams (11-1).

"This was very big," said Kam, a 5-foot-6 senior guard, who finished 5 of 6 from the field. "It felt like a championship. We just wanted to put them away and pressure them."

If Kapolei defeats visiting Leilehua on Friday, the Hurricanes will be co-OIA West champions with Radford, which ended its regular season last night. The Hurricanes have never won an OIA West title in their three-year existence.

"We needed this," Kapolei coach Jesse Baugh said. "This is going to give us a confidence boost going into Friday's game."

Kam scored seven of Kapolei's 13 first-quarter points as the Hurricanes took a 13-8 lead. After closing to 18-16 at halftime, Radwas outscored 16-5 in the decisive third quarter.

The Hurricanes increased their lead to 37-22 before the Rams made things interesting in the final minutes. Radford ended the game with an 11-0 run but could not overcome the deficit.

"I thought Kapolei came ready to play," Radford coach David Lane said. "They shot the ball real well. Their defense was real good."

Radford junior Tereva Moore scored a game-high 12 points.

Lane said one of the key performances last night was from Kapolei point guard Tricia Warashina, who finished with two 3-point baskets and several assists to Kam on the perimeter.

"She was driving and she was kicking the ball out to Kayla, and Kayla wasn't missing," Lane said.

Last night's game was a rematch of an April 2 contest won by Radford, 29-27, in overtime.

"Tonight was good because it was a playoff atmosphere, their gym was real loud, Lane said. "(Baugh) has my vote for Coach of the Year."
