UH honors 149 for academics

The University of Hawai'i honored 149 student-athletes at its annual Scholar-Athlete Breakfast yesterday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

To qualify, each student-athlete must have earned at least a 3.0 grade point average and lettered during the 2004-05 season.

For student-athletes who attended UH for one semester (freshman and transfer students), each must have attained a 3.5 GPA or higher.

Student-athletes who completed more than one semester at UH, each qualified with a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher or a two-semester GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Fifty-eight student-athletes earned GPAs of 3.5 or higher during the Spring 2004 semester and 17 had perfect 4.0 GPAs.

The scholar-athletes who earned the top team honors:

Baseball: Rich Olsen. Men's basketball: Bobby Nash. Women's basketball: Tricia Nishimoto. Cheerleading: Justin Davis. Cross Country: Sharlene Carillo. Football: Kenny Patton. Men's golf: none. Women's golf: Dale Gammie. Sailing: Maria Wong. Soccer: Joelle Sugai. Softball: Tracie Uchima. Men's swimming and diving: Andrew Affleck. Women's swimming and diving: Katie Clewett. Men's tennis: Bryon Weinberg. Women's tennis: Kimberly Curtis. Track & field: Patricia Gauthier. Men's volleyball: Matt Carere. Women's volleyball: Melody Eckmier. Water Polo: Colleen Schiman.



Tennis

Hilo coach Oda cited

University of Hawai'i at Hilo tennis coach Kula Oda was selected as the NCAA Division II West Region Men's Coach of the Year.

Oda coaches the men's and women's squads. The 33rd-ranked men's team finished 13-9, while the 12th-ranked women went 12-7.

Both teams advanced to the Pacific West Conference Championship title matches, but lost to Brigham Young-Hawai'i in each.
