Kalaheo topples Kahuku, 66-55

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

KAILUA — The Kahuku High School girls basketball team may have entered last night's showdown with Kalaheo already having clinched a share of its division championship, but the race is far from over.

Kalaheo's Shanadee Canon splits the Kahuku defense and goes in for a layup during last night's OIA East Conference showdown.

Kalaheo complicated matters by handing the Red Raiders their first O'ahu Interscholastic Association loss, 66-55, before a vocal home crowd of about 500. Kahuku (11-1) is done with its Eastern Division season, but the Mustangs (10-1) can earn a share of the East title with a victory over Kaiser (8-3) on Saturday.

If there is a tie for the East crown, a coin flip will determine the division's No. 1 seed for next week's league playoffs. Kahuku defeated Kalaheo, 49-44, in the teams' first-round meeting on April 2.

"That was not a good game for us at all," said Mustangs forward Randi Farstad, who came off the bench to score eight points and grab six rebounds last night. "We played horrible. But we were stoked about playing them again, and for the past four or five games we've been on it."

Another major difference in last night's game was the absence of Red Raiders center Aisha Ale, who scored 16 points in the teams' first meeting. Ale suffered a hyper-extended knee at the end of Tuesday's practice and suited up but did not play last night.

She is expected to be ready to play in next week's playoff opener.

"Mentally, she's always ready to go, but physically we thought we'd play it safe and rest her today," Kahuku coach Wendy Anae said. "We missed her scoring, but also her leadership. The kids are more comfortable with her in there, and they play with more confidence."

Even without Ale, the Red Raiders led 51-50 with 3:42 remaining in the game. But Kalaheo finished with a 16-4 run boosted by Farstad and Shanadee Canon.

"We had our chances," Anae said. "But our transition defense fell apart at the end. (The Mustangs) got a spark from their bench and that kept them fresh, and we didn't get that same spark."

Kalaheo used all 13 of its players, but got key production from Farstad and Kathleen Hicks in particular. Farstad did not play in the first half, but grabbed four rebounds in the third period and scored six points in the fourth, in addition to two assists.

"Randi had her two best practices of the season this week," Mustangs coach Chico Furtado said. "We actually have a surplus of post players, and that's what we've been trying to do is increase their playing time."

Dacanay commits

Punahou senior Shanna-Lei Dacanay, a second-team Advertiser All-State selection in 2004, has announced plans to play basketball for Washington University next season.

"We are excited Shanna-Lei will be joining us for the next four years," Washington coach Nancy Fahey said. "Not only is she an outstanding player, she will be a great fit for the university community."

Dacanay, a 5-foot-2 guard, has been a key player on Punahou's varsity for the past four seasons.

Washington, which competes at the NCAA Division III level and does not award athletic scholarships, finished 22-5 this past season and won four straight national championships from 1998-2001.
