"These kids worked hard in the offseason," Mililani coach Dean Sato said. "I'm very proud and very happy for them."
The Sabers fell to 7-3, tied for fourth with 'Aiea. Campbell's regular season win against 'Aiea gives the Sabers the West's fourth seed.
Trojans' starter Tony Aquino pitched six innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and four walks with seven strikeouts. He minimized serious damage in the second inning when he loaded the bases with a lead-off walk, committed a throwing error to second on a bunt and hit a batter. He then walked Keone Gaui on four pitches to force home a run that pulled Campbell to 2-1. But Aquino struck out the next two batters before getting Victor Cachuela to line out to second.
Third baseman Kelsey Nakata came in to pitch the seventh, allowing an unearned run and one hit. With two outs, a throwing error put runners at second and third. A wild pitch scored the only run of the inning before Nakata retired Shaye Asoau on a grounder to second to end the game.
"Kelsey's our go-to guy," Sato said. "He's our unsung hero this year. He's usually overshadowed by Tony Aquino and Chaz Miyashiro. Kelsey really did the job. He's a guy who can move the ball all over the place."
Nakata also helped offensively, batting 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored. John Abreu also was 2 for 3.
The Trojans posted 12 hits. Sabers' starter James Bannister gave up seven runs on 10 hits with no walks and four strikeouts in five-plus innings. Tristan Bailey came in from first base to pitch the last two innings, giving up two runs on two hits and two walks with two strikeouts.
Sato credited hitting methods he learned from former major leaguer Don Slaught for the Trojans' hitting success this season.
The Trojans started early, scoring in the first when Kamaka Crabbe doubled with two outs and Matt Arakaki hit a run-scoring single. In the second, Nakata led off with a double and scored on Jordan Apduhan's single to make it 2-0 before the Sabers scored a run in the bottom of the second.
Mililani then batted around in the five-run fourth, ignited by RBI singles from Abreu and Aquino, and Miyashiro's two-run triple. An error scored the fifth run.
"That inning was huge for them, putting up five runs," Campbell coach Rory Pico said. "It put them in a comfort zone. We had to get out of our game plan, chasing that many runs. But I'm proud of my boys for fighting back."
Asoau had a two-run double in the Sabers' fifth. It came with the bases loaded, but the runner on first was thrown out trying to score, denying Asoau a triple.
