ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Dress retro for '80s Nite at the Honolulu Academy of Arts

Advertiser Staff and News Services

The decade of Ray-Bans, pastel suits, Rubik's Cube, Dexy's Midnight Runners and the birth of MTV returns to haunt our less-colorful post-millennial lives at ARTafterDARK tonight.

The Honolulu Academy of Arts' monthly party for young art-loving adults is spinning an '80s Nite theme, with DJed tunes and a dance floor, and a surprise guest appearance by an '80s "star." You don't have to take your clothes off ... to have a good time ... oh no. But the ARTafterDARK folks are, like, totally hoping you'll show up in '80s wear to set the mood (try Molly Ringwald's fashion-forward look from "The Breakfast Club," pictured). It'll be awesome! Totally awesome! From 6 to 9 p.m.; $7 entry (free for academy members). More information at 532-6091.

Flowery sentiments

Flowers are the customary Mother's Day gift, but Mililani writer Bonnie Louise Kuchler has taken a different approach to that with her latest gift book release, "Flowers for Mom with Love" (Andrews McMeel, $9.95). The sweetly packaged little collection is made up of photographs of flowers with messages for mother that play off the visuals.

A photo of a sunflower is accompanied by the line "Thanks for keeping a sharp eye on me." A lone rose floating in a birdbath pond says "You deserve more time for yourself." The book, of course, is dedicated to her own mom, who is turning 83.

FINAL WORD

Mariah Carey | in the Arizona Republic, about reveling in her freedom following her divorce from husband/mentor Tommy Mottola:

"For years, I wasn't allowed to wear anything but a turtleneck and a full-length coat and a boot. After a while, it's like, I can have fun, and be sexy in a video, too?"
