27th Visitor Industry Charity Walk on May 21

Advertiser Staff

Entries are being accepted for next month's 27th annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk on O'ahu, Maui, Kaua'i and the Big Island on May 21.

The walk is sponsored by the Hawaii Hotel & Lodging Association in partnership with The Honolulu Advertiser.

On O'ahu, the event will start at 6 a.m. at Ala Moana Beach Park's McCoy Pavilion.

The seven-mile course will go through Waikiki, Kapi'olani Park and along the Ala Wai Canal, and return to Ala Moana Beach Park.

Money raised helps more than 170 local charities. This year the Charity Walk is dedicating a portion of the donations to organizations assisting the military and their families.

Hawai'i County police sponsor fund-raiser

Members of the Hawai'i County Police Department and their families and friends will host the 15th annual Hawai'i Police Commemorative Fund Tournament on May 13 to 15 at the Kawananakoa Gymnasium and Hualani Park field in Keaukaha.

Proceeds from the multi-sport event go toward scholarships at the University of Hawai'i-Hilo and Hawai'i Community College in memory of Hawai'i County police officers killed in the line of duty.

The tournament was started following the death of Officer Ronald "Shige" Jitchaku, who was killed May 7, 1990, while attempting to break up a large brawl on Banyan Drive in Hilo.
