Catch of the day

Advertiser Staff

Sometimes you pray for a papio and you get an 'omilu. On a fishing outing near Honolulu International Airport with family, Jennifer Barientos, who was four months' pregnant, told her husband, Carlos, "Honey, I've been praying that you'll catch a big papio today." After whipping the shoreline with his new popper, Carlos got his bite. "Every time I got him close to shore, he'd run under some rock or reef area and I just had to wait." Finally, with help from a friend, he got to see his catch in a net: a 10 1/2-pound bluefin trevally ('omilu). "I was totally, totally excited," Carlos said. Jennifer gave birth to their daughter Phoebe on Valentine's Day.
