Voice of authority helps UH

 •  Warriors could use Stadium rent-free

University of Hawai'i associate athletic director Tom Sadler wore an expansive, hopeful smile yesterday as the Aloha Stadium Authority began moving toward a milestone amendment that would give it the discretion to lower or suspend the $320,065 annual rent it charges the financially pressed University of Hawai'i athletic department.

But the smile quickly faded to mock panic as it was explained the same amendment could also give the authority a free hand to — gulp! — raise the tariff significantly.

"I'm gonna be working for you guys before the day is out," noted Sadler at the potential swing of fortunes.

Anthony Guerrero

Not to worry, though. Stadium Authority Chairman Anthony "Tony" Guerrero had the situation firmly in his gavel hand.

Indeed, you get the impression the man with the shark's tooth pendant and piercing eyes had been painstakingly navigating this issue from the beginning. That very little of what took place yesterday was not planned or foreseen.

If it wasn't all his show, he's at least taken the biggest step to bringing disparate, sometimes antagonistic, parties together. Why else would UH athletic director Herman Frazier, who a week ago had declared the Aloha Stadium rent situation the "most important item on our plate," be comfortable enough to attend meetings in Arizona yesterday?

In announcing the stadium authority meeting last week, UH officials, who have a non-voting seat at the table, said they were not responsible for putting the issue on the agenda. But it wasn't magic that got it there, either.

While one authority member acknowledged, "I never heard them (UH) come forward and ask the stadium for some kind of meeting to discuss the rent," they didn't need to. It is a safe bet Guerrero has been doing the back channel coordinating for a long time.

Guerrero's day job is head of First Hawaiian Bank's retail banking group. But the man friends call "ants" — said to be inspired by childhood bursts of energy — has hardly slowed in the run to age 60. President of the Friends of Hawai'i Charities, chairman of the Hawai'i Visitors and Convention Bureau, a director of 'Ahahui Koa Anuenue, the UH-Manoa booster group, vice president of Na Koa, the football support group ... he wields considerable influence. Guerrero's appointment to the authority ends June 30. There are two scheduled meetings before then and, barring an upset, the issue of UH rent should be on the fast track toward resolution.

As the authority meeting broke up, Sadler joked he felt fortunate to leave "with my belt" and the change in his pockets.

There's little doubt who he has to thank for that.
