UH water polo team gains MPSF semifinals

Anna Sieprath and Monika Kruszona scored goals in overtime yesterday to lead the University of Hawai'i women's water polo team to an 8-7 victory over Long Beach State in the quarterfinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships at Berkeley, Calif.
The fourth-seeded Rainbow Wahine (20-7) face top-seed UCLA (28-0) in today's semifinals. No. 2 USC and No. 3 Stanford meet in the other semifinal at the University of California's Spieker Aquatic Complex.
Sieprath scored four goals, including one with 12 seconds to play that tied the score at 6 and sent the game into overtime.
The teams played two three-minute overtime periods.
Sieprath scored 17 seconds into the first overtime and Kruszona added a goal with 54 seconds remaining to give UH an 8-6 lead.
Long Beach State's Marina Canetti scored with 1:02 remaining in the second overtime. The 49ers got the ball back with 12 seconds remaining, but could not score.
The Rainbow Wahine have their first 20-win season under head coach Michel Roy, and the fifth in the history of the program.
UH clinches berth
The University of Hawai'i coed team finished second at the Pacific Coast Championship Team Race yesterday to clinch its fifth straight berth in the Intercollegiate Sailing Association's Team Race National Championship.
Hawai'i completed the all-day event at Long Beach, Calif., with a 9-4 record. Host USC won the event and also qualified for the nationals.
The Rainbows will compete in the PCC Coed Fleet Racing qualifier today and tomorrow.
UH runners set record
The University of Hawai'i women's track team finished sixth in the distance medley relay and set a school record at the 96th Drake Relays at Des Moines, Iowa, yesterday.
Kelly Young, Tasha Monroe, Heather Scott and Dana Buchanan finished the race in 11 minutes, 31.57 seconds to eclipse the previous UH best of 11:39.26 set at last year's Drake Relays.
Michigan won the 20-team event in 11:10.80.
Young finished second in the 800, finishing in 2:08.72 to surpass the NCAA Regional qualifying standard for the fifth time this season. Oklahoma Baptist's Kyta Ferrer won in 2:07.88.
Torres topples Sakai Kapua Torres of Kahuku defeated Debbi Sakai of Mililani, 6-0, 6-1, yesterday in the fifth-place match of the 112.5-pound division at the U.S. National Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas.
Ku'u Johnson of Honolulu decisioned Andrea Hale of Chicago, 5-1, 2-0, in the fifth-place match at 147.5 pounds.
Also, Craig Leong of Honolulu was pinned by Johnny Thompson of Oklahoma in the seventh-place match of the men's 132-pound division.
