  • Fons Trompenaars — described variously as "one of the top five management consultants" globally or the "World's Greatest Culture Guru" whose clients include the likes of Shell Oil Corp., Heineken, Motorola, General Motors and Nike — will deliver the 2005 N.H. Paul Chung Memorial Lecture Friday at the University of Hawai'i. The annual lecture, featuring experts in international management, honors Paul Chung, founder of the Pacific Asian Management Institute at the UH College of Business. Trompenaars is author of "Riding the Waves of Culture and 21 Leaders for the 21st Century," an international best-seller. He will speak on "How Eastern Values are Transforming Western Business Practices — Leveraging Cross-Cultural Competence for Business Performance." The workshop, led by Richard Ma, veteran producer of videos and multimedia presentations, will illustrate how to design, organize and enhance PowerPoint presentations with graphic elements, special effects and photos.   • The last in this summer's "EMPLOYMENT LAW 2005 FOR TECH COMPANIES" ThinkTech Law Series, sponsored by ThinkTechHawaii and Pacific New Media in conjunction with the University of Hawai'i's William Richardson School of Law, will cover minimizing the risk of dealing with difficult employees — even the possible eventuality of firing them. The instructor is Richard Rand, of Torkildson, Katz, Fonseca, Moore and Hetherington.   • How, aided by declines in the cost of telecommunications and advances in information technologies, the globalization of service and sales operations is affecting employment of millions of people worldwide, will be the focus of a presentation Aug. 10, sponsored by the Industrial Relations Research Association. Speaking on "THE GLOBALIZATION OF SERVICE WORK," will be professor Rosemary Batt, who will outline an international comparative study of the call center industry, comparing employment practices in the U.S. and Europe to offshore locations such as India and the Philippines.
