Project to add 66 homes in Waipahu
By Rod Ohira
Garret Furukido, Castle & Cooke senior project manager, presented plans for the Waipi'o Point project Thursday to the Waipahu Neighborhood Board. Sixty-six single-family homes will be sited on the old Brown estate, next to the high school, which was purchased from the Queen Emma Foundation. Access to the property will be via Awanui and Awaiki streets.
The typical lot size at Waipi'o Point will be 5,000 square feet and the architecture style similar to the homes at Castle & Cooke's 230-home Renaissance project at Manager's Drive but "with a more craftsman look," said Furukido.
Features include steel-frame construction, wood accents and central air, according to Furukido. Individual homes will range from 1,350 to 2,400 square feet, and most models include a front porch and rear covered lanai, he added.
"We're enhancing what has been an unproductive section ... (and) very excited to be developing another community in Waipahu," Furukido said.
Furukido said a water-detention basin will be built on the site for storm drainage and to prevent runoff. There will be a landscaped entry at the entrance from Awanui Street and fencing around the perimeter lots to ensure privacy.
The average price is expected to be in the $550,000 range, said Furukido. Buyers, to be determined by lottery in February, should be able to move in by July or August. For information, call 548-4811 and ask for Castle & Cooke's sales office.
"I think it'll bring new life into an old, established neighborhood," said C.O. "Andy" Anderson, chairman of the Waipahu Neighborhood Board.
Castle & Cooke also is developing 275 homes in Makakilo. The Wai'kaloi project, formerly known as Palehua East, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2007, about the same time its developments in Mililani Town (8,400 homes) and Mililani Mauka (6,300 homes) are totally completed. By then, the two Mililani sites will have a total population of 50,000, according to Castle & Cooke officials.
