OCEAN CARETAKERS — The Kanaka Malama Kai (Ocean Caretakers) program on Maui needs volunteers to serve at snorkel sites and aboard tour vessels. Free training on coral reefs, protected species and other topics begins 6 p.m. today at Lahaina Civic Center, and continues tomorrow, on Aug. 8 and Aug. 9. MANOA FALLS — The Sierra Club needs volunteers to move 100 tons of gravel onto the Manoa Falls Trail starting Saturday. Meet at 8 a.m. at Church of the Crossroads, 2510 Bingham St., to carpool. POUHALA MARSH RESTORATION — The Hawai'i Nature Center is cleaning up and restoring the wetland habitat of Pearl Harbor. Volunteers are needed to pull pickleweed and mangrove 8:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday. HALEAKALA VOLUNTEERS — The next Laulima o Haleakala drop-in work day is 9 a.m.-noon Sunday. Projects include plant removal, greenhouse work, painting and trash pick-up. No experience required; appropriate for ages 6 and up. Meet at summit maintenance yard at 9 a.m.; wear long pants and closed-toe shoes, and bring rain gear, sunscreen, hat, layered clothing, water and lunch. NATURE LOVERS WANTED — Volunteers are needed to staff the Waimea Valley Audubon information kiosk for a minimum of three hours a day, once a week, providing visitors with information about the new stream trail, Family Adventure Backpacks and Audubon Adventures Guide. WEED&POT CLUB — The Maui Nui Botanical Garden's Weed&Pot Club meets from 8:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesdays at 150 Kanaloa Ave. in Kahului to weed, rake, trim or transplant nursery plants, and perform other beautification and maintenance work. Tools, gloves and drinking water provided; bring sunscreen and wear shoes.

CRATER SERVICE TRIP — The Friends of Haleakala National Park are sponsoring a service trip Aug. 14-17 at Paliku Cabin. For more information or reservations, call (808) 248-7660.

MAKIKI WAI HELPERS — The Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Hawai'i Nature Center are looking for help Aug. 27 to make trail improvements, remove weeds and plant native plants along the Makiki trail, as part of the Makiki WAI (Watershed Awareness Initiative). Water, gloves and tools provided; bring long pants and long-sleeve shirt, shoes or boots, insect repellent and lunch.
