Hawai'i team captures USTA national title

Hawai'i beat Northern California at the USTA National 16 Zonal Championships at Salt Lake City yesterday to claim the national title.

The two teams were tied at five matches apiece after yesterday's final, but Hawai'i captured the title having won 12 sets to Northern California's 10 sets.

The winners for Hawai'i yesterday were: Colin Fujishige and Kevin Tamura in boys singles, and Janelle Arita, Kristin Lim and Sara Yoshinaga in girls singles.

Other team members were: Skyler Tateishi, Keven Wong, Matthew Tavares, Brooke Doane and Christie Pagatpatan.


TOP SEEDS ADVANCE

Top seeds Ikaika Jobe and Bradley Lum-Tucker defeated Richard Gregory and Darin Kamiya, 6-3, 6-2, last night to advance to the quarterfinals of the Kailua Racquet Club Men's Night Doubles Tournament.

In other matches, Johnny Rosetti and Malino Oda defeated Ryan Laws and Chris Iwamura, 6-1, 7-6 (5); Jan Axel Tribler and Stefan Pampulov beat Mark Cayetano and Andrew Murakami, 6-0, 6-3; and Mike Bruggemann and Eric Chen defeated JT Ash and Mike Hayter, 6-2, 6-0.


BASEBALL


O'AHU IN TITLE GAME

Paul Snieder had a double and drove in three runs as O'ahu beat Central California, 14-4, yesterday at the Babe Ruth (13-15 years old) Pacific Southwest Regional at Taylorsville, Utah, to advance to the title contest.

O'ahu will play a team yet to be determined in tomorrow's championship game.


MILILANI 13S IN FINAL

Kainoa Inafuku pitched a five-hitter with eight strikeouts as Mililani advanced to the title game of the P.O.N.Y. Pony-13 World Series with an 11-1 victory over Upland, Calif. at Chino Hills, Calif.

Mililani will play Caguas, Puerto Rico in the title game at 4 p.m. (Hawai'i time) today.


O'AHU RIPKENS WIN

Kewby Meyer struck out 14 and drove in both of O'ahu's runs as the Stars beat Buchanan (Central California), 2-1, on Saturday at the Cal Ripken (ages 12-under) regional tournament at Scottsdale, Ariz., to advance to the title game.

The Stars will face either Buchanan or Northern California in today's title game.


'AIEA MUSTANGS 4TH

'Aiea was eliminated from the P.O.N.Y. Mustang (ages 9-10) West Zone Tournament after losing to Blosom Valley, Calif., 7-3, on Saturday at Chino Hills, Calif.

Earlier in the day, 'Aiea beat Corona, Calif., 11-6.

'Aiea finished fourth in the eight-team tournament.


GOLF


HAWAI'I SQUAD EIGHTH

Hawai'i finished eighth in the Girls Junior Americas Cup, that wrapped up its three-day run Thursday at Guadalajara, Mexico.

The Hawai'i team, composed of Christine Kim, Britney Choy, Miki Ueoka and Kristina Merkle, had a three-round total of 702. Mexico won the team title with a 671 score.


OCARIZA FINISHES 4TH

Honolulu's Iris Ocariza finished tied for fourth in the 16-18 age division of the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships yesterday at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Ocariza finished with a four-round total of 316. Thailand's Pennapa Pulsawath won with a 304.
