'CRASHERS' CRUISES TO NO. 1
After two weeks as a bridesmaid, "Wedding Crashers" took the top box office slot this weekend, continuing a summer winning streak for lighthearted fare. Despite three new releases, "Crashers" took in $20.5 million, according to studio estimates. "Crashers" joins an elite group of films to debut at No. 2 or lower that overtake the top spot, like 1998's R-rated comedy "There's Something About Mary," which opened at No. 4 but clawed its way to No. 1 in its eighth weekend. "Sky High," the Disney film about a high school for superheroes, performed the strongest for new films, taking third place and $14.6 million. "Stealth," the $100 million action film, took only $13.5 million.
FINAL WORD
"When I chose to concentrate on AIDS in the 1980s, many of my colleagues thought I was misguided to be focusing all of my attention on what was then considered 'just a gay man's disease.' ... I knew deep down that this was going to become a public health catastrophe."Anthony Fauci | director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, on NPR's "This I Believe."
